[52 #1]
Guess what I’m re-reading?
This cover is a classic, to me, and I hope to most other DC readers! The three emblems of our wonderful trinity, abandoned, against the mostly monochrome, troubled background. Lovely and evocative all at once.

Even if it’s done with the back of a hand it’s still a compliment. So I’ll take it.

[Nightwing Vol 2 #78]
It’s cool that he managed to graft his mask onto his skull like that. Also that a skeleton can have such perfectly lush hair! Also that the uniform isn’t sagging without all the skin and muscle crap getting in the way. It’s as filled as ever!
I actually really like the cartoon-y style here and the sort of reverse halo. Neat!

Oh goodness, this is terrifying and awesome at the same time! Hi Brian Ewing! I’m sorry if my compliment felt backhanded. I don’t bother to feature covers that I don’t personally like, since I don’t really see the point in talking about them! The skeleton-hero cover theme is a vast one, and having a less “realism” and a more artsy, fun take on it was (and still is) refreshing! Please don’t hate me I love your art

[Zatanna Vol 3 #16]
This is the other Zatanna cover I was talking about. Seriously, put on some smooth jazz and tell me she isn’t about to start singing and dancing.
Anyway, I love her little smile here.

[Batgirl Vol 1 #13]
BATGIRL BUSTED!! Though not very efficiently, seeing as she is clearly winning that little standoff.
The composition here is really wonderful. I love that the only part of Cass that is truly on panel is her fist, the rest is just reflection. Very dynamic and cool.

[Detective Comics Vol 1 #727]
Big bird and little bird, doing birdy bro things.
Gosh, with the reboot, Detective Comics won’t get back to the 700s for like 30 years.

[Titans/Young Justice Graduation Day #1]
This cover is super cool, no? Love the three YJ kids and their respective legacy-type shadows. The only one that doesn’t completely fit is Impulse-Jesse Quick, but it’s close enough that I don’t mind. I love the way the Titans characters are drawn here, with just a few emblems shown. Shows how iconic their designs really are.
I also love how hopeful this cover looks. Younger characters going forward toward destiny, older characters becoming legends… That mood doesn’t last, but it is very nice while it was there!

[Zatanna Vol 3 #14]
I was torn on which Zatanna cover to post first, this one or the one where she looks like she’s about to bust into a song and dance number any second. That one will be posted soon! I picked this one because I really enjoy her expression here. That is my face when I read a good book too, Zatanna! Let’s be soulmates!
Also, watch out for the tentacles! Impressive that there is a tentacle + female character cover combo with no groping being seen. Points to you, Hughes.

[Red Robin Vol 1 #10]
Look how far these two have come. They were so little! They had no idea how much tragedy was headed their way. And they never became less important to each other even as their relationship went through so many changes.
It’s interesting to look at their costume changes and their personality changes together. Tim had become more covered up, colors toned down to mainly just black and red. He’s a much darker, more intense figure. Steph, meanwhile, has a lot more of herself showing through than her old Spoiler costume. Her hair, parts of her face. And Steph has welded her signature color, purple, to the yellow and black Batgirl classic combo. Tim’s figure is much more severe while Steph’s has gained focus.
They both were somewhat similar characters starting out, both trying to prove their worth. But Tim was traveling more toward independence while Steph’s journey was toward acceptance within a group. Tim needed to learn how to stand on his own, not just be a supporting role or filling in a spot because he felt there should be a Robin. Stephanie needed to be able to rely on others and be relied on in turn.

[Batgirl Year One #9]
I have four Batgirl Year One covers saved for eventual posting. Each one shows a different aspect of Babs starting out as Batgirl. This is the fourth chronologically, but I decided to post it first because, having grown up only with Oracle!Babs, this is the image I think of when I think of her as Batgirl.
To get into my personal opinions for a second, I’m not terribly thrilled with Babs being back to Batgirl in the reboot. This is for several reasons- as someone who became disabled and read a lot of stories with Oracle during my adjustment period, I felt like a personal hero was being ripped away; I loved Cass and Stephs runs and don’t like them being shoved to the side and their importance minimized; it screws up my Batfamily canon; I felt like it was a huge step backwards for Barbara in her development; etc. Now, I’m not saying my opinions are wrong or right, they are just how I feel and I don’t really see them changing any time soon.
But I still love Barbara. I love that she was Batgirl. I would never want that part of her character given up and she really changed the Gotham universe in being a bold female character who wanted to help, not because of personal tragedy but because it was the right thing, who was more of a free agent in Gotham and didn’t idolize Batman to the extent that Robin sort of has to, while still being a part of the team.
This cover shows off her attitude, her youthful vigor and her utter independence. She is confident and ready to take on the world.
So I’ll always be a fan of Babs, even if I don’t read her new book. Barbara Gordon is a character that shaped me more than any other, and I’ll always, always love her for that.
